It is that time of the year when the fog rolls in across North India and driving in such weather conditions is a harrowing task. To help you navigate through the fog, we have put down some safety tips. After all, foggy weather is quite dangerous to drive in and can result in an accident if you are not careful.
Avoid driving at high speeds
With visibility being at an all-time low, it is extremely reckless to try and drive at high speeds. Not only is it difficult to see what is in front of you, it also makes it harder to react in time if you do see an obstacle at the last minute. Keep your pace slow & steady and pull over at a safe spot if fog gets too thick where the road in front of you is not visible.
Maintain a safe driving distance
Under normal driving conditions, it is recommended that you keep a two car distance from the vehicle in front of you. When you are surrounded in fog, this distance should be increased to at least a three car distance to allow for extra room to brake in the event the vehicle in front comes to a sudden halt. It is also highly recommended that you do not try and overtake while driving in foggy weather.
Make yourself visible
If you get caught in the fog while out on a drive, remember that other drivers are also out there on the road with you and as hard as it is for you to see them, they are also facing the same problem. Turn on your lights and stick to your lane. Do not make any sudden manoeuvres and bring your speed down to a safe and comfortable pace.
Avoid driving at night
With the headlights on at night, they tend to reflect straight back when driving in heavy fog, making it even harder to see the road. It is best to avoid driving on foggy winter nights, however if you do have to get somewhere, then the best thing to do is to drive with the yellow fog lights on only. Yellow light tends to cut through the fog better.
Anticipate foggy weather
The best precaution you can take is to avoid driving in the fog whatsoever. Keep an eye on the weather reports and adjust your schedule accordingly. However, if you do need to venture out, keep these tips in mind and have your vehicle ready for foggy weather driving. Ensure that your windshield is clean, your lights are all working and you have ample water in the windshield cleaner.
